The Orwells - Santos Party House - 03/1/13

I discovered The Orwells about 2 hours before their show in New York. I read about them in a Buzzfeed list and checked to see when their next show in NYC was and found out that they were playing that same night. I went by myself and took my notebook with me even though I wasn’t covering anything because then at least I could pretend I was from a cool magazine. It should be noted that 4 people asked me who I wrote for and I gave them the name of a different publication every time just to see their reactions:


“Oh Pitchfork, wow! Really?”

“Nope. Just NYU for now!” lolz.

ANYWAY. Their performance was truly awesome. It probably pisses them off to no end that press people won’t stop talking about how old they are, but DAMN they are young. I had to keep reminding myself that they are actually around my age (18/19ish) because their sound and charm on stage are incredibly refined even compared to bands that are older or have been together longer. Lead singer Mario Cuomo had a powerful presence, jumping around the stage flipping his hair like he didn’t give a single fuck about anyone and clearly pouring all the emotion he could into the music, which has become surprisingly hard to find among lead singers  recently. I can’t wait until they get the recognition they deserve. I mean if even MTV names them as one of The Most Criminally Overlooked Artists of 2012 then clearly they should be getting more love.
